Now that my daughter is getting older I don’t have to carry her diaper bag with me everywhere. Although, it means I need a purse to fit the items I used to carry in her bag. This zipper lined clutch wallet is an easy sewing project. The size of this clutch is 10" X 5", I'm able to carry a diaper, phone, keys, lipstick, cards, and my glasses.
Once you learn to sew this clutch wallet, you will understand how easy it is to make. You can then make matching items to go with it. For my self, I plan to make a side purse for my daughter Juliana.
Materials for this project are very minimal, it can be completed within 30 minutes. So let's get crafting!
Materials
- 2- 10.5” X 6” pieces of fabric (Outer liner)
- 2- 10.5” X 6” pieces of fabric (Inner liner)
- 9” Zipper
- Sewing machine
- Binder clips
- Pins
1/10 Lay Fabric Down
- Lay 1/2 of inner liner fabrics face up.
- Lay zipper face up on top of the inside liner. Place zipper tape along the fabric edging.
- The zipper slider will be lying on the left side.
- Lay 1/2 of outer liner fabrics face down. Matching all the sides together.
- Use binder clips to hold all pieces together. Place right along with zipper teeth.
2/10 Sew First Set Together
*Use Zipper Foot, Straight-line setting
- Start sewing 1” after the zipper. We don’t want it to bunch up when sewing next to the zipper. We will come back to this after we sew along the side.
- Sew all the way till the end of the zipper edge.
- Clip off threads and remove them from the sewing machine.
- Pull zipper down to the end.
- Place back onto the sewing machine. Finish sewing along with the zipper tape at the top where we left it unsewn.
- Clip ends.
3/10 Lay Remaining Fabrics
- Lay inner lining fabric face up.
- Lay zipper face up on top of the inner lining fabric. Place zipper tape at the top edge of the material. Match all sides together.
- This time the zipper slider is going to lay on the right side.
- Lay outer lining fabric face down. Match up all the sides.
- Use binder clips to keep all pieces together.
4/10 Sew Remaining Fabrics
- Start sewing along with zipper tape up to 1” from the zipper slider. We don’t want it to bunch up when sewing next to the zipper. We will come back to this after we sew along the side.
- Clip off thread ends and remove from the sewing machine.
- Pull the zipper down.
- Put back onto the sewing machine. Finish sewing the renaming zipper tape.
- Cut off thread ends and remove them from the sewing machine.
4/10 Iron Fabric
- Spread open fabrics with inside liners face down, and outside liners face up.
- Iron right along the zipper, fabric needs to be flat.
- Test fabric! My diamonds did come off when I ironed mine.
5/10 Sew in Top Stitch
*Use standard sewing foot, straight stitch and move the needle to the right position.
- Open the zipper and move the zipper slider to the end. Lay sewing foot right on the edge where the fabric meets zipper tape.
- Sew all along the edge to the end
- When you reach the zipper slider, keep the needle down, and raise your sewing foot. Close the zipper. Put sewing foot back down.
- Continue top sewing stitch to the end.
- Cut thread ends and remove from the sewing machine.
- Repeat the same steps for the other side of the zipper.
6/10 Prep Clutch For Final Steps
- Trim any sides of the fabric that may not match up.
- OPEN ZIPPER COMPLETELY
- You need to open zipper, so once you sew the sides shut, you have to flip the bag right side out, and the zipper needs to be open to do so.
- Separate the outer liners from the inner liners.
- Outer liners to one side face one another.
- Inner liners to the other side facing one another.
- In between the inner fabric lay the zipper teeth toward the inner liners.
- Pin the sides of the clutch.
- LEAVE OPEN GAP on the inner lining edges.
- Leave open a hand width of a gap at the edge so you can reach into the bag to pull right side out.
- Pin where this gap starts and ends.
7/10 Sew Sides Closed
*Use standard sewing foot, straight line and move the needle to the middle. Using .25” seam allowance.
- Start at one pin used to notify where your gap is at.
- Sew along the edges of the clutch all the way around.
- When you come upon the corners, keep the needle down just raise the sewing foot and turn your fabric then place the foot back down and continue to sew.
- When you come upon the zipper sew over the zipper edges slowly and do not sew over any of the metal or anything that could break your needle.
- Stop at the other pin you used to notify where the gap is at. KEEP THIS GAP OPEN. We will sew this later on.
- Trim off treads and remove them from the sewing machine.
8/10 Turn Right Side Out
- Trim the corners so it will not create bulk once turned right side out.
- Trim as close as you can to the thread.
- Trim the edges of the zipper so it will not create a bulk as well.
- Cut as close as you can to the thread.
- Now, turn your clutch right side out. Push all the corners out.
9/10 Finishing Touches
- Before tucking the inside liner back into the clutch you need to sew that gap closed.
- Put back onto sewing machine and sew as close as you can to the edge.
- Remove from the sewing machine and tuck the inner lining into the clutch.
